Privacy Policy

The short version

  • iQamah has no accounts. We don't sell data or show ads.
  • Your location is used only to find masjids near you.
  • Favorites, preferences and reminder settings stay on your device.

Location

  • When you allow it, the website and the mobile app use your device's location while open to find nearby masjids. The app never asks for background location.
  • The location is sent to our database (Supabase) to list nearby masjids, to our backend (Railway) to discover masjids we don't have yet (which may ask Google Places about the area), and to OpenStreetMap's Nominatim service to show your area's name.
  • Like most web services, our servers' request logs record these requests, including your IP address.
  • Map tiles come from OpenStreetMap on the website and OpenFreeMap in the app; both see your IP address and the map area you view.
  • You can deny location access and search for a city or area instead.

Search

  • Text you type into location search is sent to Google Places, with your location so nearby places come first, to suggest and look up matching places. We don't store it.
  • When you show ETAs, your location (or the place you searched) and the locations of nearby masjids are sent to our server, which asks Google for driving times. We don't store them; each device keeps the times it received as a cache for up to 30 days.

Mobile app: reminders and alerts

  • Iqamah reminders are scheduled on your phone. The times and your reminder settings stay on the device.
  • When you tap the bell on a masjid, the app sends our backend a push token (a random ID from Expo's push service for this install of the app) and the list of masjids you follow. We use them only to send you a notification when one of those masjids changes an iqamah time.
  • Unfollowing every masjid deletes the push token and list from our database. If you uninstall the app, they are deleted the next time we try to send it a notification.

Delete your data

  • To delete the data the app sends us, open the Following tab and unfollow every masjid. This deletes your push token and followed list from our database.
  • If you uninstall the app, they are deleted the next time we try to send it a notification.
  • Favorites, preferences and reminder settings are only on your device, so clearing the app's storage or uninstalling removes them.
  • To ask us to delete anything else, email contact.iqamah@gmail.com.

Website analytics

  • The website uses Google Analytics, which sets cookies, to count page visits and a few button taps. The mobile app does not use Google Analytics.
  • We also count how often each masjid is viewed, without any information about who viewed it, to decide which masjids to refresh.

Reports and feedback

  • If you answer a masjid questionnaire, your answers are stored with a random ID kept on your device, so each device counts once. Reporting inaccurate times only adds to a counter for that masjid.
  • Emails you send us go to contact.iqamah@gmail.com.
  • Messages sent through the contact form also include the app version, platform and operating system version, to help us reproduce bugs.

Error reports

  • Our backend sends error reports to Sentry so we can fix bugs. They don't contain your location or any other personal information.
